Interviewing Hannah Lago

This week we have interviewed Hannah Lago from Tea Party at the Zoo!

What did you study, where and when did you graduate?
I studied Textiles in Practice at MMU and I graduated in 2014. (Can't believe it will be 3 years this July - yikes!) The course was very diverse and you could specialise in anything from knit to fine art to digital design and art direction. I guess you could say my specialist area was digital design but there was always room for experimentation!

Describe your work in 3 words
Fun-loving, cheerful, rainbow!

Tell us about your favourite piece of your work
My favourite piece of work definitely has to be my Gigantic Giraffe earrings! They definitely establish my position as Chief Zoo keeper when I wear them! It can be difficult to find statement jewellery that is comfortable, so I decided to laser cut my designs onto perspex which is super light and perfect for costume jewellery.

Tell us about life after your degree
My design work is a reflection of me and when it comes to creativity I like to play by my own rules. Creating my own brand and business definitely felt like the right path to take. I have had quite a few 'day jobs', some much better than others to support myself financially whilst managing Tea Party at the Zoo. Some of the skills I have picked up in these day jobs have unexpectedly been transferable to Tea Party at the Zoo which is always a bonus! I am currently working out how Tea Party at the Zoo can form a larger percentage of my income by running workshops, selling my wares online, at craft fairs and through retail outlets. I really enjoyed running my first Tea Party at the Zoo workshop this year which is another area of my practice I want to develop.

If you could give your student self some advice, what would it be?
Don't panic! Be patient and keep pursuing. Don't worry if you're not in your dream job straight away, there's no rush. Whatever job you end up doing after your degree whether it is design role or working 9-5 at the office, make sure you keep making and allow time for personal creative development.

What item could you not function without?
The world isn't right until I have started my day with a good cup of tea! Also a world without animals would also be very tragic :(

Bonus question for an extra point.. just kidding there are no points.
what would your spirit animal be and why?
I like this question! I'd like to say flamingo but I definitely think a budgie represents me more, as they are small, colourful and noisy!
