Interview with Jess Gilbert!

We've really enjoyed doing the interview series so far and hope it's been helpful (or at least a little bit interesting...)! We've definitely learnt a lot from doing it...
We've decided to branch off from the graduate series and also do some interviews with current students, the first of which is with (now third year) Jess Gilbert.

Describe your work in 3 words.
Conceptual, investigative and structural.

What have you learnt since this time last year?
That everything happens for a reason, if something doesn’t go the way you planned it’s because something greater is going to happen. The most important thing I learnt at the end of first year is that your grade doesn’t matter, focus on the learning process and enjoy it, the grades will follow. (ta Julie Haslam)

What, if anything, would you do differently?
Worry less, sleep past 9am (it’s not the end of the world) and take more photographs. I would have also been a course rep, it’s so important that we voice our thoughts to change our courses and the art school for the better!

If you could go back in time and give yourself some advice, what would it be?
Comparison will kill you. You will find yourself and your practise. And… just go for it, think about it afterwards. Bask in your mistakes, nothing is ever ‘wrong’.

What has kept you sane so far during your degree?
Without a doubt my TIP gals. They're the group of friends I made in first year and became the greatest support network I’ve ever had. Especially Becky Mars, they say that you find ‘your own’ and we have been inseparable since we met. (As well as loads of brews and our studio biscuit tin)

Any last thoughts?
A few wise words… there is always time for one more brew break. And something that Becky tells me every time I get anxious about work… Everything will be ok in the end. If it’s not ok, it’s not the end.
