Interviewing Lydia Mary!

This week's interview is with Lydia Cotterell!

What did you study, where and when did you graduate?
Textiles in Practice at Manchester School of Art, specialising in Print design, graduating in 2015.

Describe your work in 3 words
Cheerful, Childish, Bright

Tell us about your favourite piece of your work
I don’t have a specific piece of work that is my favourite; I change my mind a lot from day to day. My favourite piece to actually make though is my round Vildermann cushions, the construction is straightforward and the design is a simple one colour print on a dyed background and I think that it lends itself well to a variety of colour combinations.

Tell us about life after your degree
After my degree I sort of stumbled into starting my own business, the opportunity of studios and the lack of commercial studio work available pushed me towards making my own work and range of products. As I didn’t know anything about the business side of things I applied to be part of the Craft Councils Hothouse programme, which helps creative practioners develop their businesses and luckily I got a place. I’ve spent the last year and a half developing my business and my products, selling online, in gallery shops and through craft shows.

If you could give your student self some advice, what would it be?
I would tell my student self, to firstly chill out a bit and secondly to develop more work not necessarily associated with my uni projects, to expand my portfolio.

What item could you not function without?
I feel I could probably function without a lot of things, but if it was a case of what I might miss the most it would probably be some sort of food like baked beans or pies.

Bonus question for an extra point.. just kidding there are no points. If you could have a super power, what would it be?

To stop time! like that programme Bernard’s watch,  oh the possibilities!
